..The Man From GHOST (Global Headquarters for the Organization to Sustain Terror), Ch. 5; a Chiller Theater-type show with a live host, but using humorous drop-ins during the films. A precursor to Mystery Science Theatre 3000. For example, in a scene where the Mad Scientist is writing in his journal, the show would superimpose a kids' book, such as The Little Engine That Could.

.KCRGSheriff Steve - Thanks to Phil from Dubuque

Bill Grubbe was the one that KCRG-TV (Channel 9) tried to make into a competitor for Marshal J when they used him as Sheriff Steve on weekday afternoons. He worked for us at KMRY doing an afternoon air shift, and readily admitted his time as Sheriff Steve was nothing in comparison with Jay on Channel 2. By the way, his name - Grubbe - is pronounced GROO-bee. I never knew him to use William - it was always Bill. The picture appears to show him in his Sheriff Steve cowboy hat.

Rick Sampson

.KCRG KCRG had a puppet-based Sunday show, it had a piano playing and singing dog, it was called Kidsville, USA. I remember the piano playing puppet dog host (he wore a sloppy porkpie hat) banging away to the tune of "Yessir that's my baby." The words went" "Time for fun and laughter, if its (?????) you're after, Time for Kidsville USA." The puppet did a lot of singing and they also featured a singing puppet, which was just a close up of an upside down mouth with eyes and a nose drawn on the chin -- and a blonde wig. I have never seen anything of that show, I doubt anyone at KCRG would remember.- Thanks to Phil from Dubuque

.KVVV No-No the Clown

Above - perhaps a picture of No-No?

Here's another memory of channel 16: No-No the Clown. I don't remember too much about the show, except that he used to air Dick Tracy cartoons during the program. I was on it once, along with several of my friends from the neighborhood (League City, so the station was very close to us). -Roger

No-No the Clown -- Ralph Ehntholt -- was the kindest and sweetest man I ever knew. He really did love kids. Sadly he passed away about the year 2000.

My sister and I loved the No-No the Clown show. We discovered the show when we moved to our new house in 1968 and had our first roof mounted antenna for our giant RCA console TV/stereo which I still have in my den. No-No must have aired about 2:30 or 3:30 weekday afternoons. I got out of school at 2pm and after the 10 mile school bus ride down all the gravel roads in west Houston, it was past 2:30 by the time I got home, hot and dusty. After some purple Kool-Aide and some Nilla Wafers, it was time for No-No. It seems his costume had a collar that he would flip up over his face when he said something funny. We liked him better than Bozo because he talked to the children in a less creepy tone of voice.

KVVV Channel 16 vanished around 1969 to 1970. I remember No-No The Clown in tears signing off.

.KIMA Uncle Jimmy's Clubhouse (Jim Nolan)

Jim Nolan (Uncle Jimmy). Jimmy Nolan made a huge contribution to all the children within his viewing area with his Clubhouse. It was a special, safe place that kids could go to via the television, or in person if they were lucky. He made every kid feel important, and never, never talked down to them, or put himself on show. When you watch the tapes of his shows, most of the time he is making eye contact with the children, and, when he does look out into "TV land", you know he is mostly including the kids at home, rather than sharing an arch "grown up look" with the adults. It was an important distinction, and tells a lot about the man himself. I never met him personally, but I did see him at different functions when he would come to Richland, and I remember thinking what an honestly nice person he seemed to be. He was the Fred Rogers of the Yakima Valley and beyond---and his decency came through loud and clear, reassuring, and safe.

Being able to gather around the television with my brother and sister and friends, and watch "Uncle Jimmy's Clubhouse", "Bozo the Clown", or, when we were older, the "4:30 Movie" from Spokane (lots of Errol Flynn swashbuckler stuff), or "Dark Shadows", helped lighten the mood around my house. Sometimes, the whole neighborhood was gathered in front of our big old set, with Kool-Aid and popcorn. It was cheap entertainment, but it made for a lot of memories. Thanks so much, Uncle Jimmy, for the good times and the laughter. You will always be in our hearts. -Ruth

"Uncle Jimmy's Clubhouse" I too have fond memories of that show. It was just about the first thing I saw when we finally got a television in the house. Jimmy Nolan always hosted with dignity, and respect for kids. He never made a fool of himself or played the clown. I remember him showing cartoons of a little black character (were they Sambo cartoons?) that would never play today in this era of political correctness. I also remember with fondness Bert Wells and his sidekick Prairie Pete, whose beard getting tangled in the camera was always blamed for the frequent interruptions in broadcasts that were common in the early days of KIMA. Yes, I remember watching Sky King too, but who else remembers Jet Jackson? -Bill

I remember Uncle Jimmy's Clubhouse. My little brother, Johnny ('69WB), was on the show in 1955 when he was 4. I remember mom driving to Yakima so Johnny could be on the show. I have a picture of Johnny and Uncle Jimmy taken at the time by Jerry Clark Photographer in Yakima. Johnny is all decked out in his cowboy outfit. Those were the days! -Deedee

I was a guest on the Uncle Jimmy show too... my Mom and Debbie Thompson's ('69) mom took us. It was fun, except for the part when Uncle Jimmy asked me how old I was (we were really little) and, why we do the things we do I'll never know, but I boldly piped up "I'm 12". So, that may have pretty much sealed my fate as to my Mom trusting me in the public eye. Too bad, wasn't "Starlit Stairway" the stuff that dreams were made of? Ha. -Connie

Perhap's the greatest kids show guest of them all was the Kool Aid Bunnyman. The Kool Aid Bunnyman was apparently a promotion by Kool Aid in 1968 to promote their pre-sweetened Kool Aid which was competing against Pillsbury's Funny Face Drink Mix. The Kool Aid Bunnyman appeared on kids shows throughout the nation in 1968. This included a stop in Davenport, Iowa to appear on the wildly popular Captain Ernie's Showboat. Larry Jasper explains -

05/04/06 Larry Jasper was on The Showboat with Captain Ernie and someone special!

In 1968 I was 20 years old and looking for a job. I went to the job service and checked out the listings to see what was available. One job in particular sounded interesting. It was a special promotion by Kool Aid! Kool Aid at the time had the Kool Aid Bunny who would go around and promote Kool Aid. Kool Aid at the time had Bugs Bunny on the cover of their packages for the sweetend kind. Bugs Bunny was featured on Cyclamate Sweetened Kool-Aid in the late 1960's, I am not sure if this was the tie-in with a bunny but I do know that Cyclamate was banned for causing cancer in laboratory rats.

In any case, my job was to drive the Kool Aid bunny around to his different appointments. One of these appointments was an appearance on Captain Ernie's Showboat! On the Showboat, we gave away superballs and frisbees. Ernie talked to us about different things such as where we had been that week and it was really fun being on the show.

Part of the deal was we were to drive a rented van around (which we stuck the Kool-Aid sign on) and give out superballs and frisbees to kids as they ran up to us to trade in empty packages of Kool-Aid. We ended up at one point driving thru Milan, Illinois and the bunny asked me to pull over at a tavern. He said "watch this" and proceeded to go into the bar and have a few beers. During this time, the patrons were flabbergasted and were calling him saying "Hey there is Harvey!" from the classic Jimmy Stewart film.

You can see in the picture dated May, 1968, it reads "Kool-Aid SWAP-WAGON" Swap Kool-Aid packages for a Super Ball or a Frisbee! These were the outfits we wore on The Showboat!

Another picture of the Kool Aid Bunny Man can be seen by CLICKING HERE. Bunnyman is standing next to Captain Briny from KTTS.

He can also be seen by watching the ending of this video of the kids show and cult classic Shrimpenstein! Incredible, it is the entire advertisement for the Kool Aid Bunny Man!
